The other night I gave a talk in Girona on food matters entitled: “ How can we stop being manipulated by the food multinationals”. I would like to thank Iolanda Bustos from Restaurant La Caléndula (Girona) for being so kind as to send me her notes of the presentation, which I have used throughout this blog entry. Below, I have summarised what I call “the 10 commandments” to follow to lead a life of free choice.

Below, I have summarised what I call “the 10 commandments” to follow to lead a life of free choice.
1. Think Small: Thinking small means buying artisanal products, as often as possible organic, directly from the producers or from small neighbourhood shops, thus promoting sustainability, ecology and health.

2. "DYI"- home made: Es a decir, deberíamos intentar hacernos nosotros mismos la comida con
ingredientes sanos, buenos y naturales.
2. "DYI" - home made: i.e. we should try to make healthy food for ourselves using good and natural ingredients. I explained that when I first arrived in Spain I saw how many of my friends would buy ready cooked Spanish omelettes, cooked pasta, and almost only processed foods in order to avoid having to cook. So, I decided that instead of meeting up with them at restaurants I would bring basic and simple ingredients to their homes to teach them that it is not difficult to prepare your own food and it is also a healthier and cheaper solution.

3."Don’t be gullible" – Don’t trust the big print!: I gave examples such as Actimel, yogurts that are supposedly good for the body’s defense system, 0% products or others that claim to be healthy and necessary for our body. Always check the fine print! as most of what is sold to you is pure marketing!

4. "Me"- Moderación y equilibrio.
4. "Me" - Moderation and balance. I reviewed the concerning obesity issue, especially childhood obesity, due to a poor diet and a lack of proper education given by many parents and schools. In Spain, it should be easier to eat healthily compared to other places in the world, thanks to the famous Mediterranean diet. Most countries would like to have our diversity of ingredients, and we should be the country with the highest HEALTHY life expectancy, if only we ate all a balanced diet and were more aware of the type of energy that we put on our bodies.

5."Dont’ be a fashion victim"- no sigas las
5. "Dont 'be a fashion victim" – don’t follow trends: when you follow the major consumer trends it will only lead you to consume in an unconscious and unhealthy manner. The same goes for trendy new diets such as Dukan’s or the Paleolithic diet ... They tend to be in fact quite unhealthy in the long run.

6."Be different" pensar en alternativas de las
tiendas grandes.
necesidades.
6."Be different" think of alternative smaller shops. Stray away from mainstream products and go on a search for handicrafts, or small creative clothing designers and create your own style, which meets your needs and requirements.

7. Read the fine print: For this point, I gave the example of STEVIA: the natural plant with a greater sweetening power than sugar which has healing properties against diabetes and other diseases. So why do you have to read the fine print? Because the big sugar companies are selling a misleading product supposedly made out of STEVIA, sold as a sugar substitute, which as a matter of fact is almost entirely composed of sucrose and chemicals. As the use of this plant is prohibited by the Health Agencies, because the pharmaceutical industry and multinational lobbies have banned it until further notice while they gain the economic advantages from suppressing its effects from the market. They wouldn’t want us to be able to get better from something that wasn’t a pharmaceutical now would they.

8."Take your time"- no corras: Aunque somos conscientes que el estrés forma
vida.
8."Take your time" - stop rushing: While we are all aware that stress is part of our lives, we shouldn’t let it dominate us. There are tools to manage it to use it to our advantage, such as natural therapies, homeopathy and bach flowers, or doing yoga ... There are many people who have bad eating habits, who have no time for anything and who find themselves needing to go to the gym in order to burn off those calories gained by eating junk food and sweat away their bad mood caused by their unhealthy lifestyle. That's not being happy, however if we try to turn things around and make slight positive changes to our rhythm of life, we can see how simple things can drastically improves our quality of life.

9. "Body, mind & spirit": talked about the importance of finding the right balance between the body, the mind and our spiritual energy. It is essential to listen to our bodies needs and to take care of it. I showed the room some useful thematic books that are excellent sources of information.

10. KISS - Keep it simple stupid- No te complicas la
10. KISS - Keep it simple stupid- Don’t complicate your life!: Black & white, why do we put more pressure on ourselves wanting to have the “perfect” life and have it all, when one can be happy living simply as well? So look for happiness in the little things, in your day to day and all around you.
