Una visita a /a visit to “Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture”

A visit to Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture for someone like me is comparable to the excitement a kid gets going to Disneyland.
You might as well say, it's the final paradise for food lovers.

Imagine a farm dedicated to sustainable farming, which you are invited to visit and can even enjoy some of the delicacies they produce either in their easy going lunch café or go all out in their fine dining restaurant.

In fact while driving onto the property you need to be careful for the chickens walking around freely clucking.

We started out entering the visitors center to find out about our surroundings and how and what to see. They inform us of the “Farm Etiquette” to follow while visiting the premises.

Following the “Walkabout Map” we went to visit the young turkeys, making their funny sounds and running around chasing each other.

We walked by a flock of geese who were there usual friendly selves, honking at us as we greeted them.

On the rolling hills of this beautiful Rockefeller property close to the Hudson river in New York state, just one hour outside of NYC, we walked by lines of tomato plants and all different squash vegetable patches.

The barn itself and all the buildings are built out of stone and look like straight out of the French countryside.

On one side of the farm is the famed “Blue Hill Restaurant” run by “farm to table” pioneer chef, Dan Barber.

In between buildings you will find the “Tisane gardens” and flowers all in full bloom.
We followed the paths to the Greenhouse, where all the plants on the farm begin their journey, as they say “intensively managed veggies all year-round”!

Past the Greenhouses is the sheep barn, this time of year filled with Turkey hatchlings and 3 week old turkeys.  We saw some very happy pigs in the barn next door just laying about and eating to their hearts content.

We finished up the day at the Blue Hill Café picking up a tea to enjoy while sitting in the gardens and watching the butterflies. And of course. the obligatory visit to the Stone Barns shop and “Farmers Market”.

For me it was a wonderful way to spend the day, but most importantly it's a great way to teach kids about where their food comes from and as Stone Barns’ goal is to “build a connection to the food we eat”!
